Perfectly blending tradition with modernity, Istanbul, one of the most famous cities in all of Turkey also manages to be one of the most progressive while still retaining its heritage and traditions. Those who come here are attracted by the city’s long history, the numerous landmarks but also by the fashionable and cosmopolite lifestyle.
As former capital to one of the 3 most important empires in human history, yacht charter Istanbul certainly has a lot of attractions to offer and chances are you’re not going to get them all in one trip. Here are some of the most important: make sure you start with the part of the city called Sultanahmet because that’s where the majority of the landmarks worth seeing are located, such as the Taksim, Beyoglu, Cukurcuma, Galata and Tunel.
After sightseeing you have to do a little shopping, as Istanbul is one of the world’s greatest shopping destinations. Starting with the bazaars and ending with the high fashion boutiques, you really need to walk around to get an idea or find a bargain. One of the things you shouldn’t leave Istanbul without is a kilim or a tribal carpet, a local handicraft that also makes a lovely souvenir. Among other things worth purchasing are leather items, gold and silver jewelry. Just make sure to bring your bargaining hat, because it’s considered a local tradition and no self-respecting shopkeeper will let any item go without a haggle.
Another thing that can’t be missed while in Istanbul is the nightlife. As vibrant and cosmopolitan as the city is during the day, the same can be said about the time after sunset. There are many night clubs hidden away on the rooftops of old buildings, and quite a few restaurants near the Bosphorus that as soon as night falls they change into elegant lounges. Equally modern and traditional, you can spend the night away on some futuristic beats or tap the rhythm of some Anatolian folk songs until the early hours of the morning.
For the yacht charter lovers, Istanbul offers many opportunities for celebrating, like the annual Eurasia boat show, taking place at the beginning of February. There are also numerous regattas throughout the year being organized for the sailing enthusiasts, but there are equally many things to do on land. One need only mention the Art Festival, the Millionaire Fair, the International Gastronomy Festival or the International Film Festival.
